Why we should celebrate “being bored”

Your life is limited - so make the most of it! Find out why that doesn't mean having one adventure after another and how to celebrate boredom here. A boring life can and should be celebrated!

Carlotta Koroll

Your brother already has two kids, your girlfriend is starting her own business, and your former classmate is launching a creative career - everyone seems to fill their lives with adventures and challenges. We are constantly witnessing the events happening around us. Do you feel like everyone has a special life somehow, except you?

What may feel unfair can actually be good for us. Because life goes in cycles: One year we turn our whole life upside down, and the next nothing happens. Does that make it worse? No. A boring life can and should be celebrated every now and then.

That may not be so easy, because our limited time in life sometimes puts a lot of pressure on us, doesn't it? The question of whether we are perhaps missing out on something or are not "special enough" gnaws at each of us from time to time. And even if it sounds like something out of our 15-year-old self's diary. Am I special? Whether in a fresh relationship or at work, the need to stand out is human. We want to show you why a boring life can still be great. This way you can enjoy the unexciting phases of life:

A training to appreciate the little things

How do you feel when you're in a busy phase? Maybe you feel exhausted, or maybe you feel good because you are absorbed in what you are doing. In both cases, the little joys get lost. After all, it's the days when we are relaxed, when we suddenly notice the beauty of the leaves in the wind or smile at a stranger in the street. Having the time to observe and appreciate ordinary things could almost be called a privilege in our society - although it shouldn't be. If your life is unfolding particularly slowly or seems repetitive, just become aware of it. And then start looking around for the little wonders that you would normally overlook. Right now, there is a precious opportunity to focus your attention on what would otherwise be lost in the daily routine. These can also be unpleasant feelings.

Celebrate the successes of others

Do you feel more like a supporting actor or even a spectator in the exciting lives of others right now? That's okay, we all feel that way from time to time. In those moments, you can either choose to feel small and unimportant. Or you can choose the perspective where you are grateful to play a role at all in the lives of others. And when we think about it, it becomes clear that we get much more out of the successes and highlights of others if we get to witness them than if they didn't happen to anyone. Also, we can celebrate them better when we have our own energy to actually be present. Become aware of your role. Whether you're a newlywed uncle or a bridesmaid, taking on the role of support act for a change doesn't mean you're any less important.

The superpower that no one has any more Believe it or not, many people can no longer live slowly. No sooner does life lose some of its speed than the next challenge is added to the plate. That's how many of us go about it these days. Just make sure you don't get bored or even take a step back, they say. Our time in life is precious and we should make as much of it as possible - right?

Instead of sprinting through life, take a leisurely walk. Enjoy the view, let your eyes wander and discover what you would otherwise miss. Not always having to challenge life, but also being content with what is, is an incredibly valuable and rare skill.

Trust in the future

If you feel that your life is not giving you enough right now, you are probably not in the present. You are worrying, thinking about what can happen next week or a year from now to make a difference. But now is exactly the right time to trust in the future. Maybe you can think of a situation in your life where you were worried about the future - and in the end things didn't turn out so bad? Often we worry about thoughts that have little reason to exist and drive us almost crazy. Take a breath and arrive in the here and now. Perhaps you will then realise: now, in this moment, everything is good.

Realise deeply that your whole life is happening in the present moment. Put the now at the centre of your life. Whereas before you lived in time and paid only brief visits to the now, from now on stay in the now and pay brief visits to the past and the future when necessary to deal with the practical aspects of your life situation. - Eckhart Tolle
